Mrs. Ng (aged 42)
My husband and I have been married for seven years and haven't been able to conceive. I tried IUI once but it was unsuccessful. Two years ago, I started IVF, but only five eggs were retrieved. I tried embryo implantation twice, but it was unsuccessful. Once, three weeks after the transfer, I suddenly started bleeding brownish discharge. I went to the hospital, but the doctor said there was nothing I could do. The bleeding continued for a few days, and when I went back to the hospital, they said I had miscarried. So I didn't dare try again and wanted to try traditional Chinese medicine to regulate my body first. CMP Cheung was very gentle and attentive. She told me to regulate my body before trying again. After taking Chinese medicine for three or four months, my menstrual cycle and digestive system improved a lot. When I went for embryo transfer again, I still had a little brownish discharge in the early stages, and I was afraid of another miscarriage. Fortunately, I took the pregnancy-stabilizing Chinese medicine prescribed by CMP Cheung, and the process went smoothly. My son was born healthy and is still healthy!

Can IVF be combined with Chinese medicine or acupuncture treatment?
Traditional Chinese medicine can effectively complement IVF and assisted reproductive treatments, providing support at each stage, improving success rates, and reducing side effects.
Phase 1: Pregnancy Preparation
3 months before the IVF/IUI treatment, we will develop a personalized acupuncture and Chinese medicine plan based on each couple's physical condition and needs, to nourish the kidneys and replenish essence, improve egg and sperm quality, regulate hormones, and optimize the uterine environment.
Phase 2: Egg Retrieval
Phase 3: Embryo Transfer
1-2 weeks before and after embryo transfer, taking Chinese medicine is very safe and beneficial. TCM nourishes the kidneys and replenishes Yin, improves endometrial receptivity, increases implantation rate, reduces uterine contractions, and prevents rejection reactions.
Phase 4: Early Pregnancy
The first 12 weeks of pregnancy are a high-risk period for miscarriage. TCM can invigorate qi and kidneys, nourish blood, and stabilize the fetus, significantly reducing the miscarriage rate compared to using progesterone alone. TCM also improves the spleen and stomach, helps relieve vomitting, and aids in fetal nutrient absorption and development.

If you have any enquiries, please feel free to contact us via WhatsApp
How often or how many times do I need TCM and acupuncture fertility treatment?
Treatment frequency varies depending on individual constitution and condition. Generally, weekly follow-up appointments are recommended for the first month, and most people experience improvement after 3-5 treatments. During the initial consultation, we will develop a pregnancy preparation and treatment plan for you, clearly explain the expected progress, and coordinate it with Western IVF treatment (if applicable).
Can TCM and acupuncture help with PCOS, endometriosis, immunological infertility or unexplained infertility?
Yes. TCM is particularly helpful for PCOS (regulating cycles and ovulation), endometriosis (reducing pain and inflammation), Immunological infertility and unexplained infertility by addressing underlying imbalances such as Kidney deficiency or Blood stagnation. Many patients see improved symptoms and fertility outcomes.
Is acupuncture and Chinese medicine safe during IVF fertility treatment?
Yes, when provided by a registered TCM practitioner in Hong Kong, acupuncture and herbal medicine are very safe with almost zero side effects. We customise formulas and avoid contraindicated herbs that would affect IVF or pregnancy. It complements Western medication treatments well.
When should I start TCM or acupuncture treatment for fertility before planning for pregnancy?
Most patients are advised to prepare 3 months or more in advance, as new eggs and sperm need approximately 90 days to mature. Some women experience menstrual improvements within 1–2 months. For optimal results, treatment should continue for 3–6 months, in conjunction with IVF or natural conception.
Does TCM herbal medicine and acupuncture work for fertility? the scientific research evidence
Acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine offer safe and holistic support for fertility by improving blood flow to the reproductive organs, balancing hormones, regulating the menstrual cycle, and reducing stress.
Acupuncture can thicken the uterine lining, support implantation, and improve the quality of eggs and sperm. Multiple studies have shown that it can improve the clinical pregnancy rate of IVF (RR 1.25–1.31), and some meta-analyses have shown that the live birth rate can be increased by up to 33.8%.
Chinese herbal medicine nourishes vital organs according to TCM theory. A systematic review showed that the pregnancy rate nearly doubled (about 60% with TCM vs. about 32% with Western medicine, with a treatment course of 3–6 months).
Combining traditional Chinese medicine and Western medicine can produce a synergistic effect, suitable for natural conception or IVF. It is very safe when provided by a registered Chinese medicine practitioner in Hong Kong.
